Many health insurance plans do not include any dental or vision coverage. When you try to find this type of insurance on your own, the cost can be pretty scary. Unfortunately, the cost to take your child to the dentist or optometrist for regular check-ups and treatments can also be pretty high. If you do not qualify for Medicaid because you make too much money, yet do not make enough to pay for dental and vision insurance, you may find it almost impossible to pay for this type of care. Luckily, there is a program called Child Health Plus (CHP) that is just for this situation. Here is a bit of information to help you get your child the proper dental and vision care they need.

Sliding Scale

There will be no co-pays for you when your child is covered with a CHP program. However, you may have to pay some type of monthly premium for the coverage. The amount you have to pay (if any) will be determined by your income. The idea is to ensure all children receive the care they need without causing financial hardship to the family.

Dental Care

Children will be able to see a dentist twice a year for preventive check-ups and treatments. They will also receive cleanings and have their teeth X-rayed with each visit. In addition, if orthodontic treatment is required to correct a speech, eating, or dental health problem, this will be arranged as well. However, orthodontics cannot be strictly for cosmetic reasons.

Vision Care

Your child will be able to have an annual vision check-up to determine if they need to wear corrective lenses. The child will be able to choose from a set of frames if the correction is needed. While the frame options are a bit limited, there will be some that are considered stylish. Contact lenses are not included in the coverage. However, you can pay a small fee to have a contact lens exam and then purchase the lenses yourself.

It cannot hurt to apply for the CHP dental and vision program in your state. Even if you have a premium every month, it will be better than trying to pay for a doctor's visit and any necessary treatments. The important thing is that your children will be able to have good dental health so they can avoid a mouthful of trouble and pain. They will also be able to see clearly. Your children are worth it.
