Gaps in your smile can be devastating to your self-esteem. The inability to smile without self-consciousness can lead to isolation, loneliness, avoidance, and other negative consequences. Dental solutions for missing teeth are numerous, but there are none as natural and worry-free as an implant. You may have heard about the long, drawn-out process of getting dental implants, but there is an alternative that is just as attractive and a lot quicker. Read on to find out more about mini dental implants.

Not Just a Cosmetic Problem

While the cosmetic effects of missing teeth are all too familiar to those who suffer from them, there are dental health worries as well. When a gap exists, the bone underneath the gums where the gap is begins to deteriorate. This bone loss can eventually affect the way your entire lower facial area looks. Additionally, a gap can create a domino effect with your other teeth as they begin to shift and loosen. Loose teeth are like an open invitation for bacteria to enter your gum and create dangerous dental diseases.

Other Solutions

You need something to fill the gap, and that is where implants come in. In the past, the missing tooth would be replaced by a partial denture that could be removed for cleaning. Another solution, a bridge, involves a faux tooth that is attached to the teeth on either side and is not removable. Unfortunately, bridges and dentures are not as long-lasting as implants and are prone to breakage.

Traditional Implants

Dental implants are nonremovable teeth that are permanently attached to your gums via posts. Traditional implants involve a multistep process where a post is surgically attached to the bones in your jaw. After that, you wait for several months to ensure that the post bonds with the bone to form a strong connection. Finally, the upper, visible tooth is attached to a post and ball on top of the implanted post.

The Quicker Solution

The main difference between traditional implants and mini implants is the time needed to perform the procedure. For mini implants, in most cases, the post can be implanted and completed during the same appointment. The post is shorter, giving this type of implant its name, and thus it needs less time to become attached to the bone. Not everyone is suited to this type of implant. You need to have good bone density, since the implant will not be as deep.
