Everyone is well aware that having your child brush twice a day is important to having them maintain healthy gums and teeth. However, their traditional toothbrush may not be doing the job as well as it could. Consider having your child switch to an automatic toothbrush for the following reasons.
It Helps Remove Plaque
When your child is brushing their teeth, the goal is to remove all of the plaque that is stuck to the surface and underneath the gums. When using a manual toothbrush, your child may not be moving the brush enough to effectively remove all of the plaque on those rear molars. By using an automatic toothbrush, it will use bristles that rotate to help clean those hard to reach places inside their mouth.
It Does A Lot Of The Brushing
Your child may be brushing regularly, but are they brushing for a whole two minutes? That's because they may simply get tired of doing the brushing motion each day, causing them to quit brushing earlier than they should. An automatic toothbrush is going to keep going no matter what, and can apply more brushing motions to the teeth than they would do by moving the brush manually.
It Protects Their Gums From Gum Disease
One of the hardest parts of brushing is remembering to brush properly. Moving the brush is not enough, since your child needs to overlap the brush with their gums to agitate the gums and remove the plaque hiding underneath. An automatic toothbrush will have an easier time doing this part of the brushing, which means their gums will be healthy and have a smaller chance of leading to gum disease.
It Times Their Brushing
It's common for many automatic toothbrushes to have a built-in timer on them. If your child is the kind of person that does not brush for the two full minutes each time they brush, it can help them to have the reminder that the two minutes have not elapsed yet. Some automatic toothbrushes will manually turn off after two minutes, or beep after two minutes have elapsed. More advanced models will even tell your child when to move from one section of their mouth to the next, which helps ensure they are brushing all parts of their mouth equally.
These are just a few reasons to have your child switch to an automatic toothbrush. For more tips on why it is a good idea to make the switch, speak to your child's pediatric dentistry specialist about it during their next cleaning.
